Modele symulacyjne (Epanet, Piccolo, Mike Net, WaterCad) są powszechnymi narzędziami analitycznymi, które umożliwiają badania różnych scenariuszy eksploatacyjnych systemów zaopatrzenia w wodę. Są one wykorzystywane między innymi do szacowania wartości parametrów hydraulicznych pracy sieci wodociągowej w zmiennych stanach zapotrzebowania na wodę. Modele hydrauliczne są również używane do modelowania zmian jakości wody, których zakres w dużej mierze zależy od warunków hydraulicznych pracy systemu wodociągowego.
