Environmental Pollution by Chemical Compounds Disturbing the Endocrinological Functions of Living Organisms

Antropogeniczne substancje chemiczne powodują potencjalną możliwość wystąpienia niekorzystnych skutków zdrowotnych w organizmach w następstwie zmian w funkcjonowaniu gruczołów dokrewnych (EDs - Endocrine Disrupters). Niektóre związki chemiczne mogą naśladować działanie naturalnych hormonów poprzez łączenie się z receptorami hormonów, co powoduje podobną odpowiedź komórki. Substancje chemiczne mogą wiązać z receptorami hormonów blokując je i uniemożliwiając ich działanie, mogą zmieniać liczbę receptorów hormonalnych oraz wywierać wpływ na metabolizm hormonów. Narażenie na substancje zakłócające działanie gruczołów dokrewnych może wystąpić w wyniku bezpośredniego kontaktu z chemikaliami, bądź przez przyjmowanie zanieczyszczonej żywności, wody, czy też wdychanie zanieczyszczonego powietrza. Omówiono wpływ na organizmy grupy związków szczególnie aktywnych, do których należą należą polichlorowane związki organiczne, pestycydy, środki antyporostowe, alkilofenole, steroidy syntetyczne, izoflawony, ligazy itp. Wykazano, że do najbardziej czułych skutków działania tych substancji należą endometrioza, neurobehawioralne defekty rozwojowe, obniżenie płodności, a także osłabienie systemu obronnego organizmu oraz wywoływanie choroby nowotworowej u wielu gatunków zwierząt doświadczalnych. Istnieją również poszlaki odnoszące się do człowieka, sugerujące powiązania z ekspozycją na substancje zakłócające prawidłowe funkcjonowanie gruczołów dokrewnych. Mnogość wprowadzonych do środowiska coraz bardziej skomplikowanych substancji chemicznych, mogących zakłócać działanie gruczołów dokrewnych, stanowić będzie narastający problem epidemiologiczny. Opisane zagrożenia wskazują na ich potencjalną ogromną skalę.Anthropogenic chemical substances entering the environment create favorable conditions for potential health hazards to living organisms as a result of changes in the functioning of endocrine glands. Some of the chemical compounds are capable of imitating the functions of natural hormones by forming bonds with hormone receptors, thus inducing a similar response of the cells. Chemicals may bond to the receptors and change the number of hormone receptors, thus affecting the metabolism of the hormone. Exposure to substances that disturb the functions of endocrine glands can result from the direct contact with chemicals, from ingestion of contaminated food or water, and from inhalation of polluted air. In the present study, the impact of high-activity groups of compounds (polychlorinated organics, pesticides, anti-lichen agents, alkylphenols, synthetic steroides, isoflavones, ligases, etc.) on living organisms was examined. The most sensitive effects of the exposure to those substances were found to be endometriosis, neurobehavioral developmental defects, decreased fertility, suppressed immune system and increased incidence of cancer diseases, which had been observed in many experimental animal species. There are indications suggesting that also human organisms are exposed to substances disturbing the normal functioning of the endocrine glands. The multitude of chemical substances with increasingly complicated formulas that enter the environment every day and are very likely to disturb the functioning of endocrine glands will become a serious problem to cope with in near future.
