The ground for the safe operation of multilobe journal bearings at proper oil film temperature is the full knowledge of bearing thermal performances particularly the oil film temperature distribution and its maximum value. This paper describes the theoretical and experimental investigation into the operating temperatures of pericycloid, 3-lobe journal bearings supporting the spindle of grinding machine. The oil film pressure, temperature and viscosity fields have been obtained by iterative solution of the Reynolds', energy and viscosity equations.
