This paper provides a new method for an elasto-plastic analysis of stress and deformation fields in the composite overwrapped cylinder under the pressure load. The cylinder structure consisting of steel liner and composite shell was examined. The non-linear properties of the steel tube, and orthotropic properties of the composite were assumed in this analysis. The compound cylinder was checked against internal working pressure and external axial forces. The optimal design parameters of the pressurized vessel were found by analytical as well as numerical methods, and later validated in experimental measurements.
