Określenie czasu wykonywania programu poprzez jego uruchomienie nie zawsze jest możliwe w zagadnieniach praktycznych, przykładowo w kompilacji iteracyjnej, ze względu na duże wydłużenie czasu tworzenia oprogramowania. Jednakże w wielu sytuacjach nie ma potrzeby dokładnego określenia tego czasu; wystarczyłoby go oszacować.
