Wood moisture content measurements using capacitance based moisture meters

W artykule omówiono zasadę działania pojemnościowych wilgotnościomierzy do drewna. Przedyskutowano główne źródła niepewności pomiaru. Doświadczalnie określono wpływ rozkładu wilgotności wzdłuż przekroju próbki na niepewność pomiaru. Podano analityczną zależność wielkości tej niepewności dla wilgotnościomierzy pojemnościowych i rezystancyjnych. Potwierdzono lepszą dokładność wilgotnościomierzy rezystancyjnych również w przypadkach niejednorodnego rozkładu wilgotności wzdłuż przekroju próbki.The paper starts with presentation of the basic principles of operation of capacitance-based wood moisture meters (Sections 1, 2, Figs. 1-5) followed by discussion of the main sources of moisture content measurement errors i.e. wood temperature (Section 5), sample timber thickness (Section 6), wood density (Section 7) and moisture distribution along the sample cross-section (Section 8). Next, there is described an experiment conducted to determine the influence of the cross-section moisture distribution on the measurement error (Sections 9, 10). The moisture distribution was measured using an atmospherically insulated sample of wood and a resistance-based moisture meter with insulated needles inserted into the sample on various depths. Simultaneously the measurements were taken by means of a capacitance-based moisture meter. The tests took 28 days. The results are given in Tables 1 and 2. The moisture distribution along the cross-section on subsequent days is shown in Fig. 8. Analytical dependences describing the measurement error as a function of the maximal difference of moisture content along the cross-section were determined. These dependences are given for capacitance and resistance-based moisture meters (Figs. 9, 10).
