A friend to Hungarians: Harry Hill Bandholtz and his mission in Budapest after World War I

Together with his French, British and ltalian counterparts and their staffs he was sent to Budapest at the beginning of August, 1919 for a six-month assignment to supervise the armistice and allied decisions. His daily contact with the Romanian military and diplomatic personnel and Hungarian politicians gave him a unique experience in policy matters of Hungary and Central Europe. Bandholtz was impressed by the Hungarians and their desperate struggle to secure of their national rights and justice after World War I and became a devoted supporter of their expectations and needs. He himself sealed the National Museum in Budapest and protected Transylvanian treasure from Romanian soldiers. His endless efforts to help the Magyars during hard times met with their gratitude. He finished his work in Budapest at the beginning of February 1920 as a cherished friend. On August 23, 1936 the statue of gen. Harry Hill Bandholtz was unveiled in Budapest during a ceremony commemorating his work at the Mission following World War I.557
