Restrictions on the right to vote in Peru during the nineteenth century were variable. As a result of this and unlike the rest of Latin America, a “corporate citizenship” persisted in Peru, that is, the criterion for defining citizens sought to restrict but also incorporate different social sectors. The article shows how in the nineteenth century of Peruvian history, especially after the Electoral Act of 1834, a corporate logic is established. Thus, we distinguish between “citizens” and “subjects with voting rights” on the basis of requirements that were designed to include a certain social segment. This allowed the inclusion (restricted and controlled) of various unions, who lost electoral significance as from the late nineteenth century.L...
