La extracción de ADN, a partir de muestras ambientales de variados orígenes, ha demostrado ser una herramienta rápida, rentable y de amplia cobertura para la implementación de estrategias de conservación de la biodiversidad en distintas regiones del mundo. La mayoría de las publicaciones científicas relacionadas con ADN ambiental se enfocan en peces y macroinvertebrados. Cabe acotar que, recientemente se ha incrementado el número de investigaciones en las que se utiliza eDNA para el estudio de mamíferos.
