Den vetenskapliga antiziganismen : En kritisk studie av svensk vithet

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the correlation between the construction of Swedish whiteness and the scientific field of studies called Gypsyology, which today is known as scientific anti-Gypsyism. This is achieved through three case studies of Swedish academic monographs within the field of Gypsyology written during the 20th century by historian Allan Etzler, social physician John Takman and ethnologist Karl-Olov Arnstberg. The investigation is based on a discourse analysis and examines the discursive fluctuations over time within the Swedish whiteness formation and the discourse of scientific anti-Gypsyism. The results show that the construction of a white Swedish national identity during the 20th century within Swedish scientific research was interconnected with the problematization of the Romani minority in Sweden. The results also indicate that discursive changes over time within Swedish whiteness formation had a reshaping impact on scientific antiziganist discourse. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates the importance of critical whiteness theory as an analytical tool and the fruitfulness of whiteness formation as an explanatory factor in examining historical scientific racism against racial and ethnic minorities in Sweden such as the Romani minority in Sweden. Key Words: Romani minority in Sweden, Antiziganism, othering, scientific racism, critical whiteness theory, Swedish Gypsyology, the white gaze.Den här uppsatsen undersöker hur den nationella identiteten utifrån föreställningar om ras och vithet har skapats i relation till romer i Sverige inom akademin och den vetenskapliga genren "zigenarforskning", som idag går under namnet vetenskaplig antiziganism. Undersökningen omfattar tre fallstudier av akademiska monografier från olika avgörande tidpunkter under 1900-talet, skrivna av historikern Allan Etzler, socialmedicinaren John Takman och etnologen Karl-Olov Arnstberg. Undersökningen utförs genom en diskursanalys av de olika narrativen som forskarna presenterar i sina verk och fokuserar på förändringar och beständigheter över tid i föreställningar om svensk vithet och romer. Resultaten visar att formandet av en svensk nationell identitet baserad på föreställningar om ras och vithet inom den vetenskapliga forskningen under 1900-talet kan kopplas till problematiseringen av romer i Sverige. Vidare visar undersökningen att förändringar över tid inom den svenska vitheten även hade en omskapande påverkan på den antiziganistiska forskningen och den akademiska synen på romer. Resultaten belyser den seglivade historiska beständigheten av föreställningar om ras och vithet i det svenska samhället samt hur dessa, om än i andra diskursiva skepnader, fortsätter att bidra till skapandet av en ojämlik maktrelation mellan majoritetsbefolkningen och etniska minoriteter som kategoriseras som icke-vita, såsom den romska. Resultatet är relevant för dagens integrationsdebatt och dess problematisering av de människor i samhället som ställs utanför den föreställda svenskheten.
