Cultural properties are considered to be an important aspect of sustainable development, specifically in Goals 11 and 12. The focus of this chapter is building conservation techniques using natural and recyclable materials, which are less harmful to the environment. The chapter discusses how the Swedish Environmental Code may contribute to strengthening the protection of properties that are of cultural value. It also underlines the problems concerning properties that do not enjoy a strong level of protection but hold aesthetic values that are worth preserving in relation to the case-law and the prohibition against distortion in the Swedish Planning and Building Act
