Morphological variability od selected cranial traits of primates from the Cercopithecidae family

Analiza niemetrycznych cech kraniologicznych stanowi bogate źródło informacji o zmienności wewnątrz- i międzypopulacyjnej, zarówno w aspekcie geograficznym jak i chronologicznym. Celem niniejszej dysertacji była analiza zmienności morfologicznej wybranych cech niemetrycznych czaszek naczelnych z rodziny Cercopithecidae (koczkodanowate). W pracy rozważano zależność cech niemetrycznych w odniesieniu do płci i strony ciała. Oceniano występowanie korelacji pomiarów twarzoczaszkowych i wybranych niemetrycznych wariantów morfologicznych o charakterze merystycznym, jak również oceniono przebieg wielodzielnych kanałów twarzoczaszkowych w ujęciu mikrotomograficznym (μCT). Na podstawie frekwencji cech niemetrycznych dokonano oceny odległości biologicznej analizowanych gatunków małp. Materiał badawczy stanowiły 84 czaszki należące do czterech gatunków naczelnych: makak królewski (Macaca mulatta), makak krabożerny (Macaca fascicularis), pawian masajski (Papio cynocephalus) i kotawiec zielonosiwy (Chlorocebus aethiops), które posłużyły do oceny łącznie 64 niemetrycznych wariantów morfologicznych. W badanej serii czaszek, wśród cech o największej ekspresji dominowały cechy hipoostotyczne. Na podstawie otrzymanych wyników nie stwierdzono występowania związku cech niemetrycznych z płcią i stroną czaszki. Cechy otworowe (merystyczne) wykazywały słabą i nieistotną statystycznie korelację z długością żuchwy i długością kości szczękowej. Skanowanie trójwymiarowe (3D) przy użyciu rentgenowskiej mikrotomografii komputerowej (μCT) pozwoliło prześledzić morfologię i stopień złożoności kanałów twarzoczaszkowych. Natomiast oszacowanie frekwencji poszczególnych wariantów niemetrycznych posłużyło do oceny odległości biologicznej i hierarchizacji cech w aspekcie mocy dyskryminującej. Zmienność morfologiczna wybranych cech kraniologicznych, z nielicznymi wyjątkami, ma podobny charakter jak u Homo sapiens. Zmienna liczba otworów twarzoczaszkowych sugeruje zmienny wzorzec unerwienia szczęki i żuchwy u naczelnych. Ustalono, że cechy o ekspresji bilateralnej są lepszymi zmiennymi różnicującymi poszczególne gatunki naczelnych. Aż 71,88% zaimplementowanych cech wykazywało wysoką moc dyskryminacyjną w ocenie odległości biologicznej. Natomiast cechy o najwyższej mocy dyskryminacyjnej pochodziły głównie z regionu podstawy czaszki i żuchwy wspierając tym samym teorię o istotności cech pochodzących z podstawy czaszki w analizie zależności międzygatunkowych naczelnych. Stwierdza się, że cechy niemetryczne czaszek naczelnych innych niż człowiek (NHP) z powodzeniem mogą zostać wykorzystane do różnicowania poszczególnych gatunków. Otrzymane istotne statystycznie wartości średniej miary dywergencji sugerują wpływ odmiennych czynników/presji środowiskowych w ewolucji morfologii czaszki pawianów.The analysis of non-metric craniological traits is a rich source of information on intra- and inter-population variability, both in geographical and chronological aspects. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the morphological variability of selected non-metric traits of primate skulls from the Cercopithecidae family. The relationship between non-metric traits in relation to sex and body side was considered in the paper. The occurrence of correlation of craniofacial measurements and craniofacial foramina of a meristic nature was checked, and the course of multifacial craniofacial canals in microtomographic (μCT) terms was assessed. Based on the frequency of non-metric traits, the biological distance of the analyzed monkey species was assessed. The research material consisted of 84 skulls belonging to four primate species: rhesusmacaque (Macaca mulatta), crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis), yellow baboon (Papio cynocephalus) and African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops), which were used to assess a total of 64 non-metric morphological variants. In the studied skull series, hypoostotic traits dominated among the most expressive traits. Based on the results obtained, no relationship between non-metric traits and sex and skull side was found. A foramina (meristic characters) showed a weak and statistically non-significant correlation with the length of the mandible and the length of the maxilla. Three-dimensional (3D) scanning using X-ray computerized microtomography (μCT) allowed to trace the morphology and complexity of the craniofacial bony canals. Whereas, the estimation of the frequency of individual non-metric variants was used to assess the biological distance between the analyzed primates and hierarchy of traits in terms of discriminating power. The morphological variability of selected cranology traits, with a few exceptions, is similar in nature to Homo sapiens. The variable number of craniofacial foramina suggests a variable pattern of innervation of the muzzle in these animals. Bilateral expression traits are better variables differentiating individual primates. As many as 71.88% of the implemented traits showed high discriminatory power in the assessment of biological distance. Whereas, traits with the highest discriminatory power came mainly from the basicranium and mandible. It is stated that non-metric traits of non-human primate skulls (NHP) can be successfully used for species differentiation. The obtained statistically significant values of the mean measure of divergence suggest the influence of different environmental factors / pressures in the evolution of the morphology of the baboon skull
