Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that persists in its vertebrate hosts in the form of dormant tissue cysts, which facilitate transmission through predation. The parasite must strike a balance that allows it to disseminate throughout its host without killing it, which requires the ability to properly counter host cell defenses.
