As a particularly attractive area, the coastal zone is subject to complex social and environmental dynamics, now exacerbated in the current context of global changes. Land use and land cover are both the result and relevant indicators of these relationships between man and his environment. In addition to the spatial description of these processes, as one of the main projects of geography, their temporal analysis allows to describe stages, sequences, interrelations and driving factors. This HDR thesis begins with a synthesis of the main evolutions and contemporary issues of the French coastal land use, and presents its conceptual framework in the field of Land Change Sciences.
