A follow-up study of the diversified occupations graduates of the Elgin Public High Schools, 1961-1965

Includes bibliographical references (pages 57-58)PURPOSE: To ascertain the degree of effectiveness placed upon Elgin Public Schools' Diversified Occupations Program as a means of vocational education. SOURCE OF DATA: Questionnaires were received from thirty one, or 72.1 per cent, of the Diversified Occupations graduates with known addresses who graduated from Elgin Public High Schools during the period from June, 1961, through June, 1965. FINDING AND CONCLUSIONS: The program has been effective as a means of vocational education and has been beneficial to a number of high school students in finding employment. It appears there are certain areas in the program that need improvement, namely, counseling of students into the program, better publicity of the program, and improving the related technical class. There is an indication that mathematics is needed as a part of the Diversified Occupations curriculum. Due to the technical nature of the occupations trained for, industrial arts courses should be required. It appears that post high school education would be beneficial to most young employees. There is an indication that employers will give credit for diversified occupations experience in the form of money, better working position, apprenticeship training, and shortened training period.M.S.
