The preparation and use of 2 x 2 slides in the teaching of biology

Includes bibliographical references (leaf [23])The need for a study of this type was brought about by the large papulation growth during and following World War II. Children who were born during this population boom are entering many high schools. The result is extremely crowded conditions. Crowded classrooms affect the effectiveness of certain visual aid materials. This is especially true in the suburban schools around the city of Chicago. In this paper the writer will be referring specifically to one of these suburban schools located in Palatine, Illinois. The enrollment at this school has grown from four hundred to over sixteen hundred students in the past decade. Along with this increase in enrollment come the problems of communicating with these large numbers. In past years most of our audio-visual materials consisted of films and charts. The films have proved quite successful as an aid when motion is essential to the learning process. The size of the classes have increased to the extent that the use of charts in the biology classroom is of questionable value because the charts are too small. There are between thirty and fifty-five students in the biology classes in our school. These large classes initiate the problem of producing a visual aid that all students can see The purpose of this paper is to contribute some worthwhile facts to a phase of one of these problems, that of producing good visual aids. It is the writer's hope that this paper will aid others by: (1) giving information about a visual aid that can be viewed by a large number of students. (2) showing that slides can be produced about subject: areas? that are not covered by commercial slides. (3) showing that teacher-made slides can be produced more economically than commercially-prepared slides. (4) providing information that may aid other teachers in producing good visual materials that will benefit them in their teaching.M.S. (Master of Science
