A follow-up study of non-teaching industrial arts majors who graduated from Northern Illinois University January 1955, through August 1960

Includes bibliographical references.From September 1399, when Northern Illinois University first opened its doors to 217 students under the name of Northern Illinois State Normal School,2 until the present day, with an enrollment of 4939 full-time students and 2329 part-time students {including the extension division),3 its primary objective has been teacher education. In 1920, the name Northern Illinois State Teachers College was adopted by order of the State Legislature. In 1921, Northern became a four-year institution whose primary purpose remained, to educate teachers. The majority of the first students educated here were women, and it was not until 1923, when the Industrial arts Building and the Men’s Gymnasium were dedicated, that Northern began to attract a significant number of men students. In 1933, Northern made another stride forward when it was accredited without reservation by the University of Illinois and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary School.5 2.
