Includes bibliographical references.Includes illustrations.Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the epidemal cells of developing barley embryos, Hordeum vulgare. Up till this point no extensive study has been carried out in this area of developmental plant embryology. Results from the study indicated that the process of surface development was more complicated than once thought. Nine distinct cell types were characterized. The SE micrographs in this study make up a pictorial story of the development of the maturing barley embryo. The investigation paves the way for other studies related to embryology, cell differentiation and plant development.M.S. (Master of Science
