It was observed in 1908 and 1914 in Washington D. C. when the San Jose scale, an "insect" resisted the effect of lime-sulphur (Broan, 1957). Broan adequately summarized the widespread resistance of various insects to newer synthetic insecticides in his monograph (1958b) and in his paper on insecticide resistance and Darwinism (1957).M.S.
