Alumina spinel refractories are known for their good performance in several areas of steel ladle lining. This study includes a thermomechanical investigation of an industrial alumina spinel bricks which allowed to detect microcracking (while cooling below 650 °C), brittle-ductile transition (at around 1100 °C) and variations of spinel content and stoichiometry being dependent on applied thermal treatment. Another investigation, related to model alumina spinel castables, reveals impacts of different types of aggregates, reactive aluminas and cements.
