In this paper, the author develops two examples of explorations that took place in the Pharaonic times. The first is that of Herkhuf : this « supervisor of Upper Egypt » was asked by kings Merenre and Pepy I (ca. 2230-2150 B.C.E.) to « open » a road to the land of Yam, in the Libyan Desert. In other words, he would find an access to this country, with the help of Egyptian scouts or local guides, but also secure it for following expeditions, for example by winning local chiefs over.
