Cumulus, one type of shallow convective clouds, are the result of moist convection where water vapour in the atmosphere has condensed on aerosol particles. These clouds, because of their radiative impacts on the Earth's energy balance, their role in the distribution of water in the troposphere and their ubiquitous presence across the globe are key elements of the climate. However, their short lifetime (15-30 minutes) and their restricted spatial scale (of the order of a hundred meters or even a kilometer) make their in situ observations all the more complex as these clouds are generally advected.
