LE TOURISME EN POLYNÉSIE FRANÇAISE

International audienceFrench Polynesia, isolated in the South-Eastern part of the Pacific Ocean, is internationally renowned. Nevertheless, its touristic frequenting has shown, since 1985, a tendancy to stagnate around 130 000 tourists a year, whereas its main competitors in the Pacific show spectacular progress. Today, it’s not enough to appeal to seaside tropical stereotypes - white sand beaches, coconut trees... - in so much as it doesn’t tally with the tahitian reality. French Polynesia has seen its importance decrease again and again for thirty years and is now, only the generic name for Moorea and Bora Bora which have become the two symbolic figures of polynesian tourism.Isolée dans le sud-est de l’Océan Pacifique, la Polynésie française jouit d’un renom international. Cependant sa fréquentation touristique a tendance à stagner depuis 1985 aux environs de 130 000 touristes par an, alors que ses principaux concurrents dans le Pacifique affichent des progressions souvent spectaculaires. Jouer sur les stéréotypes tropicaux balnéaires (plage de sable blanc, cocotiers…) ne suffit plus, d’autant qu’ils ne correspondent pas à la réalité tahitienne.
