This synthesis focuses on the theater in Ionia, a region chosen for the richness of its documentary sources as well as for its political and cultural unity. The first study limited to a single part of Asia Minor, it traces the history of this theater from the end of the Classical period to Late Antiquity and aims to correlate the evolution of uses with the configuration of the monuments. A reflection on the broad ancient notion of θέατρον leads to the inclusion within the corpus of any building that had a theatrical use: the odeons or bouleuterions, some of which could have served as small theaters, are included and the stadiums, complementary θέατρα in the panoply of Ionian cities, are also not excluded from consideration.
