Le théâtre en Ionie, les monuments et leurs usages de la fin de l'époque classique à l'Antiquité tardive

This synthesis focuses on the theater in Ionia, a region chosen for the richness of its documentary sources as well as for its political and cultural unity. The first study limited to a single part of Asia Minor, it traces the history of this theater from the end of the Classical period to Late Antiquity and aims to correlate the evolution of uses with the configuration of the monuments. A reflection on the broad ancient notion of θέατρον leads to the inclusion within the corpus of any building that had a theatrical use: the odeons or bouleuterions, some of which could have served as small theaters, are included and the stadiums, complementary θέατρα in the panoply of Ionian cities, are also not excluded from consideration. This synthesis is based on a catalog of remains and textual sources grouped together in sixteen entries each corresponding to a city or locality: Chios, Klazomenai, Colophon (including Notion and Claros), Ephesos, Erythrai, Lebedos, Magnesia on the Maeander, Metropolis, Miletos, Myous, the Panionion, Phokaia, Priene, Samos, Smyrna, Teos.In the beginning, the performers and agones of Ionia, famous from the 5th century BC, did without architecture in stone, which appears to have developed only at the turn of the 3rd century. The synthesis deals first with theaters as religious and agonistic destinations, placing them back within festivals, as religious spaces, stations for processions and sites of ritual practice. There follows a typological/chronological presentation of the Ionian mousikoi agones, principally organized in the honor of traditional deities and then additionally of foreign powers (Hellenistic sovereigns, Rome, and Roman emperors). Last, the evolution of the scenic space and its use by artists is traced: if the buildings were monumentalized in the 2nd century BC, it was not until the Imperial period that their architecture was adapted to new types of spectacles, notably with deeper stages. The forms adopted in the Hellenistic period are therefore largely preserved in their outline and sometimes integrated in a reconfiguration specific to the great theaters of Ionia. It is not until the end of Antiquity that the traditional space of the stage is given up in some buildings.The second part approaches the secondary uses of theaters. Uses of political or judicial nature are well attested in the region in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods; there is no evidence, however, that it was as habitual as often thought. The organization of venationes and of munerea led to well-known modifications, but in Ionia they appear to be of singular importance for their pioneering early appearances and the extensiveness of their architectural reconfigurations. Finally, the neglected problem of the martyrdom of Christians in the absence of amphitheaters is placed in the context of Asia Minor in order to better envision the few Ionian cases. This section concludes with rare examples of theaters diverted from their customary uses. After the exploration of uses, the investigation finally sets out to track the users: first, the builders, through the new subject of ancient construction drawings of theaters, presented on the global scale of the Mediterranean to illuminate the tracings newly discovered in this thesis. Then the public, their comings and goings in the buildings, distinguishable in circulation, spaces for standing and possible amenities. Finally, the place of spectators in the theater is discussed, focusing on the system of reserving seats, whether through architectural differentiation, the politics of honors or topos inscriptions. The case study of Miletus shows the end point of this evolution: spectators were divided into two factions on either side of an axial tribune present in the principal theaters of Asia Minor.Finally, after their last use as theaters per se at the end of the 6th and beginning of the 7th centuries, their subsequent uses up to the present are considered.Cette synthèse porte sur le théâtre en Ionie, région choisie pour la richesse de ses sources documentaires comme pour son unité politique et culturelle. Première étude limitée à une seule partie de l’Asie Mineure, elle retrace l’histoire de ce théâtre de la fin de l’époque classique à l’Antiquité tardive et s’attache à mettre en relation l’évolution des usages et celle de la configuration des monuments. Une réflexion sur la notion de θέατρον conduit à étendre le corpus à tout édifice ayant eu un usage théâtral : les odéons ou bouleutèrions, qui ont pu faire office de petits théâtres, sont retenus et les stades, θέατρα complémentaires dans la panoplie des cités ioniennes, ne sont pas exclus de la réflexion. La synthèse repose sur un catalogue des vestiges et des sources textuelles regroupés en seize notices correspondant chacune à une cité ou une localité : Chios, Clazomènes, Colophon (dont Notion et Claros), Éphèse, Érythrées, Lébédos, Magnésie du Méandre, Métropolis, Milet, Myonnèse, le Panionion, Phocée, Priène, Samos, Smyrne, Téos. Au commencement, artistes et concours ioniens, célèbres depuis le Ve s. av. J.-C., se passèrent d’une architecture en pierre qui semble ne s’être développée qu’au tournant du IVe et du IIIe s.La synthèse traite d’abord de la destination religieuse et agonistique des théâtres, les replaçant dans la fête, comme espaces religieux, stations de processions et lieux de pratiques rituelles. Suit une présentation typo-chronologique des concours musicaux ioniens principalement organisés en l’honneur des divinités traditionnelles puis de puissances étrangères (souverains hellénistiques, Rome, empereurs romains). L’évolution de l’espace scénique et de son utilisation par les artistes est enfin retracée : si les édifices se monumentalisent au IIe s. av. J.-C., ce n’est qu’à l’époque impériale que leur architecture est adaptée à de nouveaux types de spectacles, avec une estrade plus profonde notamment. Les formes adoptées à l’époque hellénistique sont alors conservées dans leurs grandes lignes et parfois intégrées à une reconfiguration propre aux grands théâtres ioniens. Ce n’est pas avant la fin de l’Antiquité que l’on renoncera dans certains édifices à l’espace scénique traditionnel.Une deuxième partie aborde les usages secondaires des théâtres. L’usage politique ou judiciaire est bien attesté dans la région à l’époque hellénistique ou impériale ; rien ne prouve qu’il ait été aussi habituel qu’on l’a pensé. L’organisation de venationes et de munera a entraîné des modifications bien connues, mais qui apparaissent singulières en Ionie, par leur précocité et la façon dont elles participent à une reconfiguration en profondeur des édifices. Enfin, le problème négligé du lieu du martyre de chrétiens en l’absence d’amphithéâtres est posé dans son contexte micrasiatique afin de mieux envisager les quelques exemples ioniens. De rares cas où les théâtres ont été détournés de leurs usages habituels concluent cette partie. Après l’exploration des usages, l’enquête part enfin sur la trace des usagers. D’abord les constructeurs, à travers le sujet nouveau des épures de théâtres, présenté à l’échelle du monde méditerranéen pour éclairer les tracés découverts dans le cadre de la thèse. Puis le public, dont on restitue l’évolution dans les édifices, distinguant les circuits, les espaces de stationnement et les éventuelles commodités. Enfin l’on discute de la place des spectateurs au théâtre, en s’intéressant au système de réservation des places, que ce soit à travers la singularisation architecturale, la politique des honneurs ou les inscriptions topiques. L’étude du cas de Milet permet d’atteindre le terme de l’évolution : les spectateurs y étaient divisés en deux factions de part et d’autre d’une loge axiale présente dans les principaux théâtres micrasiatiques. Un épilogue envisage, après la fin de l’utilisation des théâtres comme tels au tournant du VIe et du VIIe s., les usages qui furent les leurs jusqu’à nos jours
