L’œil inverti. Homoérotisme et culture visuelle dans les revues Der Eigene et Akademos

International audienceIt is at the heart of the first openly homosexual publications at the beginning of the 20th century that a male homoerotic feeling emerges between the lines and images. The study of the German magazine Der Eigene and the French Akademos offers a fledgling vision of gay beauty canons that in turn feeds aesthetic debates on the origin and development of artists' homoerotic feeling. Against the backdrop of psychopathological discourses condemning homosexuality, homoeroticism becomes a means of circumventing the sexual ban and sublimating it through art. This article aims to contextualize these oppositions through two conceptions of modern homosexuality: on the one hand, the theory of the androgynous and effeminate third sex, and on the other, the masculinist theses of virile and misogynistic friendship. These two seemingly contradictory paths guide the critical reception of the artistic, photographic, and illustrated productions contained in these journals. They announce a historical reflection extended to the Italian Renaissance and consolidate the sharing of nascent homosexual sensibilities, of which visuality becomes an essential driving force.C’est au cœur des premières publications ouvertement homosexuelles du début du XXe siècle qu’un sentiment homoérotique masculin émerge entre les lignes et les images. L’étude des revues allemande Der Eigene et française Akademos offre une vision balbutiante des canons de beauté gays qui alimente en retour les débats esthétiques sur l’origine et le développement du sentiment homoérotique des artistes. Sur fond de discours psychopathologiques condamnant l’homosexualité, l’homoérotisme devient un moyen de contourner l’interdit sexuel et de le sublimer par l’art. Il s’agira de contextualiser ces oppositions à travers deux conceptions de l’homosexualité moderne : d’une part la théorie du troisième sexe androgyne et efféminé et de l’autre, les thèses masculinistes de l’amitié virile et misogyne. Ces deux voies en apparence contradictoires guident la réception critique des productions artistiques, photographiques et illustrées contenues dans ces revues. Elles annoncent une réflexion historique étendue à la Renaissance italienne et consolident le partage des sensibilités homosexuelles naissantes, dont la visualité devient un moteur essentiel
