42% of the urban population were found living in 300,000 slums counted throughout the world in 2018. 80% of these shanty towns are situated in the global South. Slums are located in abandoned spaces close to cities as such they raise questions both as an unavoidable urban fact and as areas with natural and man-made risks. In Haiti, a country of the South, the increase in the urban population is reflected above all in the growth of slums, with 17 counted in 1950 and around 400 in 2020.
