Magnetic sensors based on the Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) effect have a good sensitivity with a resistance which is proportional to the external magnetic field. In addition, they are sensitive at small scale (a few microns), at room temperature and along a unique axis of sensitivity. Thus, they are good candidates to measure the magnetic fields generated by the electrical activity of neurons at local scale like action potentials which have an amplitude expected between 10 and 100 pT at 1 kHz. As GMR sensors have a limit of detection (LOD) in the nT range at low frequency, several studies were conducted, including on the size and composition of the GMR sensor, to improve it.
