Listening comprehension is a major domain in which students are trained for when learning a foreign language in high school. The French national syllabus sets as objectives reference levels of the CEFR but international surveys highlight the poor performances of French students particularly in listening comprehension activities. A bibliographical review shows that a lack of automatisation in the decoding of speech constitutes a limiting threshold for the intermediate student who is then unable to compensate the faulty perception by interpretation strategies.
