L'exotique, la soumise et la terroriste : la représentation de la femme arabe à Hollywood

This master’s thesis is dealing with the representation of Arab women in Hollywood by analyzing three main stereotypes, the exotic Arab woman, the veiled and submissive Arab woman, and finally the terrorist Arab woman. We question to what extent these movies constitute the majority of the representations of Arab women in Hollywood, what functions do these characters fulfill in their own movies and more generally speaking, the American cinema and finally, what social phenomena are underlined by these historical imagery. In order to answer these interrogations and grasp the issue, four films were chosen, Aladdin, Death before Dishonor, Protocol and Black Sunday. We study these cinematographic universes to understand the mechanisms of representations at work and how they are linked to geopolitical events that forge these same clichés.Ce mémoire a pour sujet la représentation de la femme arabe à Hollywood en traitant trois stéréotypes remarqués, celui de la femme arabe exotique, de la femme arabe voilée, soumise et enfin la femme arabe terroriste. Nous questionnons dans quelle mesure ces films constituent les représentations majoritaires de la femme arabe à Hollywood, quelles fonctions ces personnages remplissent au cinéma américain et quels phénomènes sociaux sont soulignés par ces imageries historiques. Pour répondre à ces problématiques, quatre films sont sélectionnés pour analyser les trois clichés en question, Aladdin, Death before Dishonor, Protocol et Black Sunday. Nous étudions ces œuvres cinématographiques pour comprendre les mécanismes de représentations mis en œuvre et comment ils sont liés à des événements géopolitiques qui forgent ces mêmes clichés
