International audienceThe use of cf. instead of voir(“see”) in French scientific writingis relatively new and still condemned by some academics, as it reflects a shift from the original meaning of the Latin verb confer, of which it is the abbreviation. Based on an electronic corpus of theses, our study describes various uses of voir and cf. We put these markers into the wider context of the tools used to signal reference in scientific writing. Our hypothesis is that these linguistic structures play an evidential role as they are used to introduce evidence into scientific argumentation.
