International audienceA payment for environmental services (PES) scheme is based on direct economic incentives to influence pro-environmental behavior. This paper focuses on the factors explaining the attitudes of land users involved in a watershed PES linked to rural hydro-electrification in Madagascar. Indeed, in spite of planned and actual compensations well below the opportunity costs induced by restrictions of agricultural practices, as well as institutional dysfunctions to their disadvantage, these land users signed a three-year PES contract in 2013 and respected their ecological and agricultural commitments during this period.
