International audienceSince 1981, various prospecting campaigns conducted by by Luc Long (Drassm) off Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer have resulted in the identification of 39 ancient shipwrecks. From this exceptional concentration of wrecks a highly singular characteristic has emerged: near the former mouth of the Rhone Saint-Ferréol the deposits inventoried are in fact exclusively composed of raw materials. Dating from the Early Empire, no less than thirty shipwrecks loaded with lead, iron, tin, copper, bronze, marble and wood are listed. No shipwrecks loaded with amphoras are documented, yet during this period millions of individuals transited the Rhone axis.
