This doctoral work is a contribution to the understanding of the effects of labels when associated with brands. It focuses on the effects of labels on consumer perception of quality, brand relationships and willingness to pay. The definition of quality and the designation of bodies in charge of its standardization are historical issues that can be traced both in the principles of Roman law and among medievalist theologians and, more recently, at the heart of the theoretical distinction between goods or attributes of search, experience and belief. The thesis aspires to go beyond the brand-buyer dyad. It considers that quality cannot be guaranteed by the supplier alone under certain circumstances.
