International audienceThis work aims at reading the doctrine of free will in Dante’s Comedy in light of Franciscan theological sources by Petrus Johannis Olivi, who wrote on this subject after the Paris condemnations of 1277. This study puts forward the hypothesis that for a full understanding of free will in the Comedy, we must take into account both the central part of Purgatory and the Sphere of the Moon, at the beginning of Paradise, where the freedom of will becomes the greatest gift that the Creator gave to intelligent creatures
