International audienceTV and video recordings of operas shed valuable light on the history of public operatic productions. The severe constraints to which these recordings were subjected tell us a great deal about the situations and the contexts in which these works were performed so that they would be understood by as large an audience as possible. Once these operas have been extracted from their situated production context, they are usually accompanied by long diegetic commentaries in order to place them in a cultural setting which is more familiar to the spectators for whom these films are intended.
