Un spectacle à distance ? L’opéra à la télévision et au cinéma

International audienceTV and video recordings of operas shed valuable light on the history of public operatic productions. The severe constraints to which these recordings were subjected tell us a great deal about the situations and the contexts in which these works were performed so that they would be understood by as large an audience as possible. Once these operas have been extracted from their situated production context, they are usually accompanied by long diegetic commentaries in order to place them in a cultural setting which is more familiar to the spectators for whom these films are intended. The operatic genre is therefore doubly reconfigured, in both time and space. Since it first emerged in the 17th. Century, its history reflects the many social changes which have occurred since then, as well as the audiences’ expectations in terms of the current vocal and narrative traditions and the strong social links generated by participative practices. These cultural frameworks have passed the test of time. But since they have never been strictly defined, specified or taught, they have escaped all forms of litteral, objective investigation. They come to the fore, however, when it comes to translating opera into cinematographic and televisual terms, whereby operas are re-thought and presented in new contexts. In order to apprehend these changes and describe the forms they have taken, it is worth addressing the question as to what the original spectators who have attended an operatic performance in situ have to say about these new forms of presentation and how they resist them. Defining the ineffable qualities of works of the past presented in anachronous or incongruous settings therefore constitutes the first step towards defining opera (1) as a ceremonial social form of art and (2) as an experience of a highy unusual style of singing, (3) as a particular rather outdated narrative form.Les captations télévisuelles ou vidéographiques d’opéras livrent un éclairage réflexif précieux sur les fondements des pratiques lyriques en salle. Subissant de véritables épreuves de passage, ces captations reconstituent les situations et les contextes à partir desquels ces productions font et faisaient sens pour les rendre accessibles au plus grand nombre. Une fois sortis du contexte de leur production située, ces opéras s’enrichissent le plus souvent de longs développements diégétiques destinés à les réimplanter, à les réinscrire dans un terreau culturel le plus familier aux spectateurs auxquels les films sont destinés. Le genre subit ainsi un double déracinement, temporel et situationnel. Son développement depuis le xviiie siècle, au plus près de mobilisations sociales souvent diversifiées, a constitué auprès des publics de salles un horizon d’attente façonné autour d’une culture vocale et narrative, fortement socialisée par des pratiques partagées. Dans la durée, ces cadres culturels se sont maintenus. Mais, jamais objectivés, explicités ou enseignés, ils sont restés étrangers à toute investigation littérale ou « objective ». Ils réapparaissent néanmoins dans l’exercice de traduction à partir duquel le cinéma ou la télévision « pensent » l’opéra pour l’implémenter dans de nouveaux contextes. Pour appréhender ces cadres et en dessiner les formes, on peut se demander comment les primo-spectacteurs – faisant la première fois l’expérience de l’opéra en salle – évaluent et prennent langue avec le genre, identifient ce en quoi il leur échappe. Déterminer le caractère insaisissable, hors de saison ou incongru des opéras du passé est ainsi un préalable à la description qui décline (1) l’opéra comme une forme cérémonielle et sociale, (2) l’opéra comme expérience d’une manière inaccoutumée de chanter, (3) l’opéra comme forme singulière et datée de faire récit
