Quels mythes pour les confins du monde (Arabie, Éthiopie, Inde) ? Les choix de Denys d’Alexandrie dans la Périégèse du monde habité

International audienceThis paper deals with the myths that accompany the description of Ethiopia, Arabia and India in the Periegesis of the Inhabited Earth by Dionysius of Alexandria (Periegetes). I will first examine the mythographic material used by D.P. (e.g., Dionysos' expedition to India, the two groups of Ethiopians in the Odyssey)and also the myths he leaves out (Andromeda, Phoenix, Memnon ...). I will then try to explain why such choices were (probably) made by Denys. In my opinion, it is likely that the mythographic material connected to the description of the world's edges mirrors Dionysius' geographical conceptions. Indeed, Denys, like Strabo, does not place all the countries of the southern parts of the oikoumenê on the same level and grants a pre-eminence to Arabia and India and not to Ethiopia.Cet article a pour sujet les mythes qui accompagnent la description de l’Ethiopie, de l’Arabie et de l’Inde dans la Périégèse de la terre habitée. J’examinerai tout d’abord le matériau mythographique utilisés par Denys (par exemple, l'expédition de Dionysos en Inde, les Ethiopiens divisés en deux groupes de l'Odyssée). J’examinerai aussi les mythes qu’il laisse de côté (Andromède, Phénix, Memnon …). Je tenterai alors de rendre raison de ces choix faits par Denys. Il est probable que le traitement mythographique des confins du monde soit en étroite relation avec les conceptions géographiques de Denys. En effet, Denys, comme Strabon, ne place pas tous les pays des confins méridionaux de l’oikoumenê sur le même plan et accorde une prééminence à l’Arabie et à l’Inde
