Disclosed is a catalyst system exhibiting high activity and selectivity in the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones using molecular oxygen as a terminal oxidant. Such catalyst system comprises quinone-type compound and is particularly useful for, but not limited to, the oxidation of primary or secondary aliphatic and aromatic alcohols to the respective aldehydes or ketones.
