Stories of racism in football in Rio Grande do Sul countryside.

Pelotas and Rio Grande are two cities located in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, with an expressive Afro-descendant population, where the football culture arrived at the end of the nineteenth century marked as an elitist European Custom, commonly used to set social distinction. After the beginning of the second decade of the twentieth century, with the accession of the workers and the Afro-descendant population, a process of popularization of football was established in these cities. This, however, does not mean that the racism or the cases of offense and racial discrimination in the football universe of Pelotas, Rio Grande, and the entire southern zone of Rio Grande do Sul, has come to an end. In this way, the study presented here sought to analyze and discuss stories of racism within the football memories of the cities Pelotas and Rio Grande. The research products resulted into three academic articles. In the first article a systematic qualitative review of the productions about Afro-Brazilians in Football, published in scientific journals with scope in Physical Education classified in extracts B2 or higher by the 21 Area of the quadrennial 2013-2016, was carried out. The results indicated a plurality of topics addressed as well as a plurality of methodologies used, but also some gaps, such as the absence of studies between the occurrence of the 1950 World Cup and the beginning of the Twenty-First Century; Black women in football; and the racism in school football and basic categories. The second article is the product of historical documentary research was carried out within daily and weekly newspapers of the city of Rio Grande on the Rio Branco sports league (1926-1930). The results indicated that the said league consisted, mainly, of sports associations that were not accepted in the Rio-Grandense League, amongst them, two associations linked to the Afro-descendant population of the city that keeping a close relation with black football clubs from other cities in Rio Grande do Sul, the S. C. Rio Negro and the Bangu F. B. C., which participated in other cultural activities of the black population of Rio Grande, such as dances, theatrical evenings and carnival. The third article deals with racism in professional football of Pelotas and Rio Grande, after the second half of the twentieth century, through the methodology of Oral History. Several racist episodes witnessed by the interviewed black former footballers were reported. It is noteworthy the tendency towards higher incidences of racial offenses in cities that have more descendants of European immigrants (Germans, Italians etc.), as well as a veiled structural racism in the making of choices for managers and coaches of clubs, lowering the chances of former Black footballers being chosen for these roles. That said, it can be concluded that the tensions and racial conflicts of Brazilian society appear as a constituent mark of the history of football in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.Sem bolsaPelotas e Rio Grande são duas cidades do Rio Grande do Sul com expressiva população negra, nas quais, no final do século XIX, o futebol chega como um costume europeu elitista utilizado como marca de distinção social. A partir da segunda década do século XX, com a adesão de operários e da população negra, institui-se um processo de popularização do futebol nessas cidades, o que não significou, no entanto, o fim do racismo nem dos casos de injúria e discriminação racial no universo futebolístico de Pelotas, Rio Grande e toda a zona sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo buscou analisar e problematizar histórias de racismo nas memórias futebolísticas das cidades de Pelotas e Rio Grande. Os produtos da pesquisa foram sistematizados em três artigos acadêmicos. No primeiro artigo foi realizada uma revisão sistemática qualitativa das produções sobre o negro no futebol brasileiro publicadas em periódicos científicos com escopo na Educação Física classificados nos extratos B2 ou superior pela área 21 do quadriênio 2013–2016. Os resultados indicaram uma pluralidade de temáticas abordadas e de metodologias utilizadas, mas também algumas lacunas, como a ausência de estudos sobre o período entre a copa de 1950 e o início do século XXI; as mulheres negras no futebol; o racismo no futebol escolar e nas categorias de base. O segundo artigo é produto de uma pesquisa histórica documental em jornais diários e semanais da cidade de Rio Grande sobre a Liga Esportiva Rio Branco (1926–1930). Os resultados apontaram que a referida liga era constituída por agremiações esportivas que não eram aceitas na Liga Rio-Grandense, dentre elas, duas agremiações vinculadas à população negra de Rio Grande que mantinham relações com clubes negros de futebol de outras cidades do estado, o Bangu F. B. C. e o S. C. Rio Negro — o qual também participava de outras atividades culturais da população negra de Rio Grande, como bailes, saraus teatrais e o carnaval. O terceiro artigo trata do racismo no futebol profissional de Pelotas e Rio Grande a partir da segunda metade do século XX, através da metodologia da História Oral. Foram relatados vários episódios racistas presenciados pelos ex-futebolistas negros entrevistados. Destaca-se a tendência a uma maior incidência de xingamentos raciais em cidades com uma maior presença de descendentes de imigrantes europeus (alemães, italianos etc.) e de um racismo estrutural velado que aparece de forma subjacente nas escolhas de dirigentes e treinadores de clubes, dificultando as possibilidades de ex-futebolistas negros serem escolhidos para essas funções. Conclui-se que as tensões e os conflitos raciais da sociedade brasileira aparecem como uma marca constituinte da história do futebol do interior do Rio Grande do Sul
