Giambattista Vico and the Emergence of Historical Consciousness

This essay contains several things that ought to make a contribution to Vico scholarship. After my first chapter, setting forth the plan of the essay, I complete the introduction of the New Science by describing the history of Vice\u27s three ages as a history. In the New Science, Vico himself treats the elements of this history topically. He does not provide a chronological exposition of the ideal eternal history and the corresponding modifications of men\u27s minds.
