A new approach to the study of contrast in neo-clasic tragedy: the characters

En este artículo se realiza un acercamiento al género de la tragedia neoclásica a través del análisis del tratamiento, uso y función del recurso del contraste en las principales composiciones trágicas del siglo XVIII en España con especial incidencia en el análisis de los personajes. El contraste se convierte en un recurso de enorme utilidad a la hora de hacer efectivo el didactismo de estas composiciones, al servicio de la mentalidad ilustrada de una sociedad absolutista. Resulta asimismo especialmente productivo desde el punto de vista del rendimiento dramático, puesto que permite contraponer varias figuras o grupos de personajes, contribuyendo al mismo tiempo a una más completa caracterización de los agonistas en un contexto en el que éstos suelen carecer de profundidad psicológica con el fin de ajustarse a la unidad de carácter recomendada por los preceptistas. Al establecer el contraste entre varias figuras se les confiere individualidad, una serie de rasgos exclusivos y propios por los que el autor toma partido de acuerdo con sus propósitos didácticos, con las enseñanzas que le interese comunicar.This paper presents an approach to Neo-classical tragedy through the analysis of the function of contrast in the main plays of 18th century Spain, having a special interest on character analysis. Contrast is used as a highly useful resource to activate the didactic tone of these plays at the service of an illustrated mentality in an absolutist society. It also becomes quite productive from the dramatic performance scope, since it allows for the contraposition of several figures or characters in a subtler manner of characterisation within a context that usually lacked psychological insight ( due to the need to fit the character unit recommended by prescriptive thinking). On enhancing contrast between characters, the writer provides them with individuality, a range of exclusive and inner features through which the author tends to take sides in agreement with didactic aims and the teachings to be conveyed.peerReviewe
