Understanding the fundamental atomic-scale\ud processes responsible for the bulk physical\ud properties of solids has long been the aim of\ud structural physics. Historically, there has been a\ud strong emphasis on the understanding of the\ud properties of crystalline materials from a structural\ud crystallographic perspective. The majority\ud of this work has, of course, focused on the\ud information that can be gained from Bragg\ud scattering of X-rays.
