This paper was presented at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford University and, following, at the Fowler Museum, UCLA, internationally highly-regarded institutions of African art research. ‘Vernacular, Transitional and Modern Architecture in East Africa’ evinces and interprets a body of photographic recording spanning 1990 to 2005. In concert with analyses of East African architectural forms, the paper discusses methodologies of photographic recording, a discussion informed by photographers from Africa, including David Goldblatt and Guy Tillim, and Europe, such as Bernd and Hilla Becher’s observations of industrial architecture.
