The thesis deals with the numerical modelling of process and mechanical strength of joining by deformation with self-piercing riveting as main application. The first step was to develop a material model. This model needed to represent all the phenomena which appeared during the riveting process or during the mechanical testing of the joint. We have opted for damaged elastic-plastic behaviour. The damage law is based on the model of Lemaitre and its strain equivalence principle. We have improved this damage model to take into account the crack closure effect and a lower limit of triaxiality under which the damage cannot evolve.
