Vallée des Merveilles : relevés topographiques et SIG archéologique

International audienceThe valley of Marvels is a wide archaeological site, located in the Mercantour National Park. It holds more than 40 000 protohistorical rock engravings and more recent testimonies of visits in this valley for a few centuries of modern history. Since the late 19th century, many archaeologists have studied this area, rich in figurative and abstract engravings. Very recently, measurements by GPS have permitted a full and accurate inventory of these rocks coordinates, for an improved study of the area. This surveying work has led to the development of a web GIS for the study of this legacy. Such a tool allows the analysis of spatial distribution of engraved rocks, in order to understand it at the scale of the whole area. Thus, the interpretation of this material can be improved for further research. French IGN, ENSG and the Lazaret laboratory have worked together for completing the inventory of this site, therefore extending the research led on the understanding of these engravings.La vallée des Merveilles est un vaste site archéologique dans le parc national du Mercantour. Elle comporte plus de 40 000 gravures rupestres protohistoriques, ainsi que des témoignages des passages dans cette vallée le long de plusieurs siècles. Depuis la fin du XIXème siècle, de nombreuses équipes d'archéologues étudient ce site riche en gravures, figuratives ou non représentatives. Récemment, des mesures GPS ont permis de mettre au point un inventaire complet et précis des coordonnées de toutes ces roches gravées, pour une meilleure étude du site. Ces campagnes de levés topographiques ont pu aboutir à la création d'un SIG web pour l'étude de ce patrimoine. L'utilisation de cet outil permet d'analyser la répartition spatiale de ces roches, afin de mieux comprendre leur organisation à l'échelle du site et en tirer certaines interprétations. En collaboration avec l'IGN et l'ENSG, le laboratoire du Lazaret a pu compléter l'inventaire de ce site, et approfondir les recherches sur la compréhension de ces gravures rupestre
