Tendencias, magnitud y causas de las huelgas de trabajadores dependientes de un empleador en Chile

This article analyzes the principal characteristics, trends and causes of the strikes that took place in Chile during the period 1979-1995, as well as the most important difierences currently found in the analysis of legal and ilegal strikes, type of industry, unionized and nonunionized strikers, public, private and state-owned companies, and municipal sectors. The number of strikes, workers involved, man-days lost and average duration was used in the analysis. The study is based on the universe of strikes that took place in the above mentioned period, and the sources of inlbnnation were the Directorate of Labor, Carabineros de Chile (police) and the written press. Some of the principal findings that should be mentioned are the important number of strikes that occurred in the public sector -in which they are forbidden-, the increase in the number of illegal strikes and the decrease in the number of legal stiikes in the private sector, and the wage increases and protests against discharge as the main causes of strikes.El presente artículo analiza las principales características, tendencias y causas de las huelgas ocurridas en Chile durante el período i 979 a 1995, como asimismo las diferencias más importantes entre huelgas legales e ilegales: ramas de actividad económica: grado se sindicación de los huelguistas: .sectores público, privado, empresas del Estado y municipal. Para los efectos anteriores se utilizó el número de huelgas, de trabajadores comprometidos y de días-hombre de trabajo perdidos, y la duración. El trabajo se basa en el universo de huelgas ocurridas en el país en mencionado período, siendo la Dirección del Trabajo, Carabineros de Chile y la prensa escrita las principales fuentes de información. Entre los resultados cabe destacar el importante número de huelgas que se llevan a electo en el sector público, no obstante que en éste están prohibidas, el aumento del número de huelgas ilegales y la disminución de las huelgas legales en el sector privado, así como el aumento de remuneraciones y los despidos como las principales causas de las huelgas
