El deterioro de la relación de intercambio : algunas perspectivas

The terms of trade have a major impact on the share of world income corresponding to developing countries. Therefore, it is not surprising that they have insisted on placing it at the top of the international economic agenda. The purpose of this article is not to examine the policy aspects of the terms of trade problem. Instead, it focuses on the debate on the theory of the deterioration hypothesis and on the statistical evidence that corroborates this hypothesis. Then we ask whether the one-dimensional criterion of the terms of trade, as conventionally defined, can even in principle bear the burden imposed on it, and attempts are made to improve it by adding more dimensions to it.La relación de intercambio incide sobremanera en la participación del ingreso mundial correspondiente a los países en desarrollo. Por tanto, no es de extrañar que hayan insistido en colocarla en los primeros lugares del temario económico internacional. El objeto del presente artículo no consiste en examinar los aspectos de política del problema de la relación de intercambio. Se concentra, en cambio, en el debate relativo a la teoría de la hipótesis del deterioro y en la evidencia estadística que corrobora dicha hipótesis. Luego hace el cuestionamiento si el criterio monodimensional de la relación de intercambio, según se la define convencionalmente, puede soportar siquiera en principio la carga que se le impuso y se intenta perfeccionarlo agregándole más dimensiones
