This article argues that the concern of the United States Catholic Church for the protection and promotion of human rights is a relatively recent issue, as it is also for North American society. Its attitude in this regard is guided by a central, local dimension –with their own positions based on their tradition and their environment– and a global one given by the experience that their contact with other realities of the world has given them, particularly in Latin America.
