This research explores the changes that the arrival and intensification of tourism brings to rural contexts and its influence on gender roles. A qualitative case study involving interviews and participant observation was conducted in the Sacred Valley of Cusco, Peru. We found that dynamics associated with rural tourism have influenced gender roles in both the family and community environments. On the family level, tourism drives the monetization of domestic work and the entry of women into the labor market, which in turn leads to a growing involvement of men in domestic tasks.
