A review of sociological questions raised by social mobility studies on the issues of inequality and the organization of stratification systems is made in this article. Data address situations that are paradoxical and do not always have a simple interpretation. Is more equitable a society with higher occupational mobility? Are privileges the reverse side of exclusion? What are the social levers of occupational mobility? How much consistency can be recognized amongst positions, culture and class formations?
