Arqueobotanica y Etnografía del Extremo Sur Americano: Estudio de Piezas de Museo (Arcos y Astiles)

The study of the bow and arrow system used by hunter-gatherer societies represents a great difficulty for the archaeological record. In most archaeological contexts remains only a minor part of the system: the lithic or bone end. However, in the case of Tierra del Fuego the written and ethnographic collections deposited in museums are alternative resources of knowledge for not only an approaching to the adoption of this type of weapon but also their manufacture. The general objective of this work is generate information about the characteristics of the bow and arrow system used by native peoples of southernmost South America. The specific objectives are two: to identify the raw material used for the manufacture of bows and shafts and infer how and with what instruments were made. For this purpose ethnographic pieces deposited in the Museum del Fin del Mundo (Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) were studied. Taxonomical and morphologic analyses were carried out on one of each wood arches and handles. The obtained results revealed, among other things, an unknown exploitation of raw materials (Ribesmagellanicus) in the region.El estudio del sistema de arco y flecha utilizados por las sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras representa una gran dificultad desde el registro arqueológico. En la mayoría de los contextos arqueológicos sólo se conserva una parte menor del sistema: las puntas líticas u óseas. No obstante, para el caso concreto de Tierra del Fuego la información escrita y las colecciones etnográficas, depositadas en museos, constituyen un recurso de conocimiento alternativo para acercarse no solo a la adopción de este tipo de armasino también a su fabricación.El objetivo general de este trabajo es generar información sobre las características del sistema de arco y flecha utilizados por los pueblos originarios del extremo sur sudamericano. Los objetivos específicos son dos: identificar la materia prima utilizada para la manufactura de arcos y astiles e inferir de qué manera y con qué tipo de instrumentos fueron confeccionados. A tal fin fueron estudiadas piezas etnográficas depositadas en el Museo del Fin del Mundo (Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). Se llevó a cabo un análisis taxonómico y morfológico de cada uno de los arcos y astiles de madera. Los resultados obtenidos revelaron, entre otras cosas, la explotación de materia prima (Ribes magellanicus) hasta ahora desconocidas en la región
